Pathways of the Friendly Society

The M&A Faltaits Museum of Skyros (represented by Manos Oikonomakis) is working with local high school students to create an interactive map that draws on the museum’s archival material on the Friendly Society (a 19th century revolutionary organization) and the Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire. At the center of the project lies the figure of philanthropist Ioannis Varvakis, whose life and work students are investigating as a means of understanding the larger transnational networks that facilitated the movement for Greek independence.

In the summer of 2020, SNFPHI summer grantee and History and Anthropology B.A./M.A. student Sunny Chen is collaborating with the M&A Faltaits Museum to develop a board game that introduces players to the geographies, economies, and cultures that Friendly Society members inhabited.
