The M&A Faltaits Museum of Skyros (represented by Manos Oikonomakis) worked with local high school students to develop history, geography, and palaeography workshops drawing on the museum’s archival material on the Friendly Society (a 19th century revolutionary organization) and the Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire. At the center of the project lies the figure of philanthropist Ioannis Varvakis, whose life and work students investigate in order to understand the larger transnational networks that facilitated the movement for Greek independence.
In connection to this project, SNFPHI summer grantees Sunny Chen and Rebecca Collins-Pfeiffer developed two board games that introduce players to the geographies, economies, and cultures that Friendly Society members inhabited
