The project Unraveling the Cocoon of Memory: Women’s Narratives of a Fading World will come to a culmination on May 27 with a public gathering in Soufli. Faculty and students from Aristotle University’s Laboratory of Narrative Research will present the four-part podcast that they have created documenting women’s lives in Soufli and invite their podcast participants to share stories with the public. For this final event, project members will create an oral history laboratory where attendees can record their own stories. They will then place QR codes throughout Soufli so that anyone can use their phone to listen to stories connected to particular locations.

To mark the beginning of their collaboration, the Institute for Ideas and Imagination (II&I), its public humanities arm SNFPHI, and the Benaki Museum are organizing a workshop exploring the topic of walking at Patrick and Joan Leigh Fermor’s house in Kardamili. This workshop will take place May 17-20 and bring together artists, curators, journalists, activists, and academics to reflect on their work and practice, worksop ideas for projects, and consider the place of walking in visual and ethnographic imagination, public history, and community engagement. II&I and SNFPHI Director Mark Mazower and Patrick Leigh Fermor’s biographer Artemis Cooper will open the workshop with a discussion, a recording of which will be available online.

SNFPHI at Columbia University has launched its second call for proposals for projects that bring the ideas and insights of the humanities to life for the Greek public. The Initiative focuses on three main areas: History (e.g., preservation, oral history, archival practices, material culture); Creative Arts (e.g., performance, curation, literature); and Education (e.g., learning resources, teaching tools, educational games).

Projects are selected for a 14-month term. SNFPHI provides an initial $8000 grant for project development and implementation (e.g., remunerations, transportation, consumables, equipment) and organizes training for grantees at Columbia’s Institute for Ideas and Imagination in Paris. Grantees will also have access to additional funds for the public presentation of their projects (e.g. exhibitions, website development, etc.).

The online application is available on SNFPHI’s website here. Proposals can be submitted in Greek or English by January 31, 2022.

2021 marks the bicentenary of the Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire. For this occasion, SNFPHI and the Program in Hellenic Studies developed a one-time seminar course that brings together faculty from Hellenic Studies, History, Italian, and English as well as guest speakers to consider the revolution and its various legacies and to introduce students to research across disciplines. As part of the course, SNFPHI is running a translation lab to provide students with access to primary materials that are not currently available in English. The course’s syllabus, materials, and lesson plans will be posted on the SNFPHI website at the end of the semester. Read the course description here.
