Established in 2019, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Public Humanities Initiative (SNFPHI) at Columbia University supports projects that bring the ideas and insights of the humanities to life for the Greek public. The Initiative recognizes the creativity, innovation, and potential for broad impact of public-facing humanities projects in Greece. It promotes projects through funding, resources, training, and collaboration with the Columbia University community.
The Initiative supports endeavors in the fields of history, creative arts, and education that have the potential to maximize the long-term impact of public humanities, are in a position to benefit significantly from SNFPHI and Columbia support, and are undertaken by or for younger generations. Projects receive support for 14 months. The first call for proposals was announced in December 2019 and the first cohort of projects in March 2020.
SNFPHI joins a growing network of public humanities programs at Columbia University. It collaborates with the Institute for Ideas and Imagination, the Heyman Center for the Humanities, and the Program in Hellenic Studies to support public events, workshops, exhibitions, and student fellowships that connect the field of Hellenic Studies with a broad public audience. SNFPHI is exclusively supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
